Scope
Aims, scope and focus
NeoBiota is published by Pensoft Publishers and is in Zone 2 of Environmental Science & Ecology in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Ecology and Vegetation Dynamics Studies, Plant and animal studies and Species Distribution and Climate Change, together about 35% of its articles. Its main subfields are Ecology. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
NeoBiota publishes papers that appeal to an international audience, addressing various aspects of biological invasions. The journal covers a wide range of subjects and disciplines, including the ecology, evolution and biogeography of non-indigenous aquatic and terrestrial animals, plants, fungi and micro-organisms; the mechanisms driving their introduction, establishment, spread and impact; the ecological, evolutionary, economic and other consequences of biological invasions; and the management of invasions in any part of the world. NeoBiota also strongly encourages submissions on ethical, social, legal and policy issues related to biological invasions. Manuscripts that only report on restricted aspects of the biology of a non-native species but do not address a subject related to the broader topic of biological invasions are not appropriate for the journal. NeoBiota does not generally publish papers that describe the natural spread of native species across political boundaries as a result of climate change (so called neonative species), unless such studies have a strong bearing on biological invasions, for example if there was either a strong anthropogenic component to their spread in addition to any climate change or a direct comparison between neonatives and sympatric non-indigenous species. NeoBiota also has a policy of not publishing papers that solely report new records of an alien species in a new region. Manuscripts that present only a checklist of alien species, without additional data, analyses or broader insights, will not be considered for publication. Submissions must go beyond simple inventories by including, for example, novel data and analyses, methodological advances or critical synthesis that contribute to understanding biological invasions, their consequences and/or their management.Manuscripts featuring species distribution models (SDMs) are welcome if they go beyond simply reporting the distribution of a species under new climatic conditions, i.e., they need to uncover new aspects of the process of invasive species’ range dynamics under changing conditions. Since alien species inherently violate basic assumptions of SDMs, this needs to be taken into account adequately. They need to be described in a reproducible way, and it is crucial to test the transferability of the parameterised model, using appropriate cross-validation approaches.Data papers represent a distinct article type (see the Author Guidelines) and the scope appropriate fo
