Scope
Aims, scope and focus
Journal of Vegetation Science is published by Wiley-Blackwell and is in Zone 3 of Environmental Science & Ecology in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Ecology and Vegetation Dynamics Studies, Plant and animal studies and Botany and Plant Ecology Studies, together about 47.5% of its articles. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
The Journal of Vegetation Science publishes articles on all aspects of plant community ecology and the macroecology and biogeography of vegetation and regional floras, with particular emphasis on papers that develop new concepts or methods, test theory, identify general patterns, or that are otherwise likely to interest a broad international readership. Papers may focus on any aspect of vegetation science, e.g. community structure (including community assembly and plant functional types), biodiversity (including species richness and composition), spatial patterns (including plant geography and landscape ecology), temporal changes (including demography, community dynamics and palaeoecology) and processes (including ecophysiology), provided the focus is on increasing our understanding of plant communities. The Journal publishes papers on the ecology of a single species only if it plays a key role in structuring plant communities. Papers that apply ecological concepts, theories and methods to the vegetation management, conservation and restoration should be directed to our associate journal, Applied Vegetation Science (AVS). Papers on vegetation classification should be directed to the IAVS journal Vegetation Classification and Survey (VCS), while papers on vegetation survey may be directed to either AVS or VCS.

Fees & open access
APC and open-access policy
A subscription journal in which authors can pay to publish their article open access.

| OpenAlex | USD 3,600 / EUR 3,000 / GBP 2,400 | — | — | |

A hybrid journal charges the APC only when the author chooses open access; publishing under the subscription model is usually free.
The journal's website is authoritative for fees; sources were observed at different times and each keeps its own value, without averaging.
