Aims, scope and focus
Journal of Neurochemistry is published by Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd and is in Zone 3 of Medicine in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology Research, Receptor Mechanisms and Signaling and Ion channel regulation and function, together about 35.8% of its articles. Its main subfields are Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience and Molecular Biology. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
The Journal of Neurochemistry is dedicated to disseminating research covering all aspects of neurochemistry. The journal scope includes studies on genetic, molecular, cellular and biochemical aspects of the nervous system, the pathogenesis of neurological and psychiatric disorders, and the development of specific biomarkers for nervous system diseases and conditions. We prioritize original research that mechanistically demonstrates an advance as well as critical reviews that highlight progression of knowledge in the field. The Journal of Neurochemistry is devoted to the prompt publication of original findings of the highest scientific priority and value that provide novel mechanistic insights, represent a clear advance over previous studies and have the potential to generate exciting future research. The Journal of Neurochemistry does not publish work relating to biological extracts of unknown chemical composition or purity. All compounds reported must have a known chemical structure and concentration. The Journal of Neurochemistry publishes full-length presentations of significant original findings, and also narrative and systematic reviews, submitted by investigators with relevant expertise. Articles are published in the following categories. Please note that these definitions are not exhaustive, and your research may fall into more than one category. Gene regulation & Genomics covers the regulation of gene expression, specifically its control by regulatory non-coding and coding RNA species that may initiate, block, or modulate the expression levels of detected transcripts by interacting with them and changing their levels and/or properties. Brain Development & Cell Differentiation covers investigations into the molecular mechanisms of nervous system development and regeneration. It includes the regulation of neural development and regeneration by the extracellular environment and intrinsic programs, and the impact of genetic and environmental factors on brain development. Synaptic Plasticity covers manuscripts on structural and functional aspects of synaptic plasticity, including homeostatic and pathophysiological forms, and the role of glial cells and extracellular matrix in synaptic transmission dynamics underlying neural information processing. It includes in vitro and in vivo research, biochemical, molecular, and cellular mechanisms involved in synapse formation, maintenance, resilience, and in synaptopathies. Bioenergetics & Metabolism covers the m
