The Journal of Adventure Education & Outdoor Learning is an official publication of the Institute for Outdoor Learning. The main purpose of the journal is to provide a central point and place of reference for the publication and dissemination of research and scholarship on adventure and the outdoors for learning and education. The journal aims to promote dialogue, research, thinking, teaching and practice from critical perspectives in the fields of adventure education and outdoor learning. It intends to publish papers concerned with social, cultural, political, ethical and environmental issues in the outdoor studies field. Outdoor Learning is an umbrella term for actively inclusive facilitated approaches that predominantly use activities and experiences in the outdoors which lead to learning, increased health and wellbeing, and environmental awareness. Adventure Education refers to the educational implications of activities which are perceived to have elements of personal, social or psychological risk. Therefore, while similar to outdoor learning or outdoor education, terms that may be used synonymously, Adventure Education couples those with challenge or uncertain outcomes. Papers that report on research with a wide international interest are especially welcome, as are papers engaging with critical, theoretical and methodological perspectives. We welcome submissions from all fields that relate to the outdoors and adventure, such as sport, tourism, leisure, geography, education and beyond. We are actively seeking articles that address ecological and social justice, moving away from anthropocentric colonial neoliberal frameworks. The journal accepts Original Articles submitted directly through the Taylor & Francis Scholar One system. These are your ‘typical’ academic manuscripts, which might include a review of literature, a methodology, results and such. Original Articles undergo rigorous double-blind peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two anonymous referees. The word length for these manuscripts is up to 9000 words (including all component pieces – abstract, references, etc.). We also publish: Editorial Commentaries – these are primarily the introductions for special issues and are submitted by the guest editors directly to the Editor-in-Chief. Editorials are reviewed by the broader editorial team as part of the production process. Composite Articles – these are thought pieces that do not fit the conventio
