CIAN-Revista de Historia de las Universidades published every six months by the research group in History of Law of the Figuerola Institute of History and Social Sciences at the Carlos III University of Madrid. The journal was founded in 1998 within the now-defunct Antonio de Nebrija Institute, under the direction of Adela Mora Cañada, and initially titled Cuadernos del Instituto Antonio de Nebrija. Its purpose was to provide a common forum for discussion, the circulation of knowledge, and the dissemination of results for the growing community of scholars focused on the history of universities. This community, with the decisive support of Mariano Peset Reig and the stimulus generated by the organization of a series of International Congresses, had formed research teams consolidated across various Spanish, European, and American universities. Although initially focused on the history of Hispanic universities, both Spanish and Latin American, CIAN has gradually expanded its scope, intensifying its internationalization. It has simultaneously broadened its chronological and thematic range, incorporating, especially through its special issues, reflections and debates on the current situation and challenges faced by universities today. This evolution has made it the most widely disseminated and influential journal in its field worldwide, serving as a privileged and preferred vehicle for the exchange of ideas, innovations, and trends in the field of university history. Until 2022, its print edition was published by Dykinson. Currently, it is available exclusively in electronic format.
