Предметной областью издания «Труды ИСП РАН» является системное программирование – исследовательская подобласть широкой дисциплины программирования, которая объединяет изучение новых архитектур, алгоритмов, структур данных и т. д., а также деятельность по проектированию, разработке, отладке, тестированию и сопровождению системного программного обеспечения. Другими словами, системное программирование обеспечивает основу для всех других видов программного обеспечения и связывает компьютерную науку и информационные технологии. В России «Труды ИСП РАН» является единственным изданием, полностью специализирующемся на вопросах системного программирования. Исторически в издании в основном публиковались статьи российских авторов, но со временем географический охват журнала значительно расширился и теперь статьи поступают со всего мира. Издание публикует как результаты проектов в области системного программирования, так и отдельные теоретические или экспериментальные результаты и обзорные статьи. Тематика запрашиваемых рукописей включает, но не ограничивается следующими темами: операционные системы; технология компиляции; базы данных и информационные системы; параллельные и распределенные системы; разработка программного обеспечения; инструменты моделирования и проектирования программного обеспечения; проверка, валидация и тестирование программного обеспечения; статический и динамический анализ программ; безопасность программного обеспечения; компьютерные алгоритмы; искусственный интеллект.
