O periódico espera que os manuscritos submetidos à publicação tenham abrangência social e política, e estejam diretamente vinculados aos debates contemporâneos em Linguística Aplicada, tal como se pode evidenciar pelos temas, questões de pesquisa e diálogo com a literatura do campo. Os principais eixos de pesquisa do periódico são: interculturalidade e identidades; educação linguística; tecnologias e redes sociais; tradução; multimodalidades e intermidialidades; ideologias linguísticas; antropologia linguística; políticas linguísticas; globalização e mobilidade; discurso e desigualdade. Além de artigos, TLA recebe entrevistas e resenhas de obras recentes e de relevância para a área de interesse do periódico, que são publicados em fluxo contínuo. Juntamente com essas contribuições, são publicados anualmente até três dossiês sobre temas específicos, aprovados pelo corpo editorial, divulgados em chamadas especiais e revisados pelos pares. O periódico destina-se a docentes, discentes, pesquisadoras, pesquisadores e profissionais que tenham interesse pelas discussões da área de Linguística Aplicada.
