The Sri Lanka Journal of Medicine (SLJM) is the official journal of the Kandy Society of Medicine. It is a peer-reviewed, indexed journal that is currently published biannually. The SLJM aims to publish locally, regionally and internationally relevant original research articles, reviews, case reports and perspectives with the objective of disseminating knowledge among health care workers and health care scientists. Manuscripts from any area of the basic sciences, laboratory science, clinical specialities or subspecialties may be submitted for consideration. All articles published in the SLJM are deposited with Crossref and the manuscripts submitted are screened by the Crossref Similarity Check to detect any instances of plagiarism. The SLJM envisions being a platform where local and international authors can publish work that discusses locally and internationally relevant problems, as well as studies that have global impact. We want to encourage academic writing among clinicians, academics, scientists and other health care professionals. To this end, we aim to provide a rapid, expertise based, blinded peer review process. This process is meant to both maintain the academic standards of the journal and provide authors with constructive and relevant feedback on gaps and areas for improvement in their manuscripts. Even if a submission is not selected for publication at the end of the review process, we hope the feedback will provide authors with some of the tools they need to progress in their academic writing and research journey. The ‘Audit’ section of the journal has been introduced to encourage research at all levels by improving documentation of practice, outcomes and results, basic analysis and reflection on performance. We also hope to encourage the initiation and maintenance of databases in Sri Lanka, a crucial feature of any research culture. We hope that encouraging authors to publish a simple audit will help them to: i) improve their data collection and handling skills; ii) improve their scientific writing and reporting skills; and iii) give them the confidence and the raw materials to progress to higher levels of research. We also want to encourage academic reading among both health care professionals and students. To this end, we encourage authors to use simple, direct language that will be understandable to a non-specialist reader. We have also initiated a ‘Postgraduate and Undergraduate teaching’ section where clinical cases of importance are di
