Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Skin Pharmacology and Physiology is published by S. Karger AG and is in Zone 4 of Medicine in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Advancements in Transdermal Drug Delivery, Dermatology and Skin Diseases and Skin Protection and Aging, together about 43.7% of its articles. Its main subfields are Dermatology. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

Topical therapies are the main interest of this journal that seeks submissions of original papers and systematic reviews in pharmacological aspects of the skin and skin physiology. Modulation of the epidermis (e.g. epidermal barrier function), exogenous influences on skin functions, studies of skin physiology (if performed with non-invasive instruments), and the study of the regulatory pathways involved in skin penetration of topical formulations through in vivo and in vitro models are invited. Studies with well-characterized active ingredients performed on animals will not be accepted but may be eligible if specific pathways or modes of action with little or no published data are studied. Systemic treatment studies on epidermal functions and innovative approaches to methodology, skin pharmacology or clinically relevant problems and cosmetic studies with relevant effects on skin physiology and an appropriate control (i.e. placebo, not comparison to baseline) may be submitted.
