Selekcija i semenarstvo je popularizacija istraživanja i aktivnosti iz oblasti oplemenjivanja biljaka i semenarstva u Srbiji i šire. Časopis je pre svega usmeren na gajene poljoprivredne biljke. Stoga su ciljne grupe časopisa, stručnjaci iz oblasti oplemenjivačke i semenske industrije, kao i istraživači, profesori i studenti, kojima su ovo oblasti interesovanja. Časopis objavljuje radove iz svih oblasti koje dotiču oplemenjivanja biljaka (uključujući genetiku biljaka, biljne genetičke resurse i njihovo očuvanje, biljnu fiziologiju, biljnu patologiju kao i rast i razviće biljaka) i semensku proizvodnju (uključujući, kvalitet i fiziologiju semena, proizvodnju, doradu, uzorkovanje, skladištenje, distribuciju i ispitivanje kvaliteta) u sledećim kategorijama radova: Originalni naučni rad; pregledni rad; predhodno saopštenje; naučna polemika, stručni rad, stručna polemika i prikaz knjige. Pored toga, kao priloge van kategorizacije, časopis može objavljivati novosti, dokumenta i tehničke izveštaje, koji su važni u procesima oplemenjivanja biljka i semenske proizvodnje.
