GICOS es una revista del Departamento de Medicina Preventiva y Social de la Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Los Andes, de publicación cuatrimestral y de acceso abierto. Se publicó por primera vez, en formato físico, en el año 2008, la publicación digital se inició en 2016 y a partir de 2022, su periodicidad es cuatrimestral. Los artículos que se aceptan para su publicación son: artículos originales, reportes de caso clínico-epidemiológicos-comunitarios, ensayos y revisiones. El objetivo fundamental es promover la investigación y la publicación de estudiantes y profesionales vinculados a ciencias de la salud, mejorando la comunicación académica y contribuyendo en la formación de pregrado y postgrado a nivel nacional e internacional. La revista recibe durante todo el año trabajos en español, inéditos y originales que versen sobre temas relativos a Ciencias de la Salud, como aportes teóricos y empíricos con enfoques locales y/o internacionales. Específicamente los mismos pueden consistir en: Artículos originales: Hallazgos originales como, por ejemplo, adelantos o avances significativos de investigaciones en proceso que ameriten ser difundidos, resultados de investigaciones concluidas. Reporte de casos: Estos estudios comprenden la descripción de casos clínicos o epidemiológicos o comunitarios en profundidad de los antecedentes, condición actual y respuesta a la terapéutica de un individuo o comunidad analizada. Ensayos: Escrito breve argumentativo e informativo, que expone la interpretación personal del autor, producto de su reflexión teórica, persuadiendo con su discurso al lector sobre un punto de vista. Artículo de revisión: Escrito producto de una cuidadosa revisión documental que comenta, describe, resume, sistematiza, analiza y/o critica literatura, publicaciones o acontecimientos recientes; con el fin de informar sobre avances o tendencias de interés científico en el área de Ciencias de la Salud. En la Revista GICOS, el envío, procesamiento y publicación de artículos para autores en la revista es totalmente gratuito.
