Primitive tider et frittstående vitenskaplig tidsskrift drevet på frivillig basis. Tidsskriftet er anerkjent som nivå 1-tidsskrift av Universitetets- og høgskolerådet, og gir poeng etter tellekantsystemet. I tillegg til artikler publiserer Primitive tider bokanmeldelser og andre kortere tekster (som rapporter og meningsytringer eller debattinnlegg) som ikke fagfellevurderes og dermed ikke gir uttelling i publiseringsindikatoren. De gjennomgår likevel en redaksjonell vurdering. En målsetning for tidsskriftet er at unge og nyutdannede arkeologer med liten skriveerfaring skal kunne få publisere sine tanker og resultater, forhåpentlig uten at skrive- og forskergleden går tapt. Tidsskriftet er også åpent for ferske så vel som etablerte forskere som ønsker å presentere arbeid hvor forskningsprosessen står i fokus, og som bidrar til å vise kunnskap som produksjon. Primitive tider publiserer artikler fortløpende, med en årlig trykt utgave. Tidsskriftet inneholder en blanding av frittstående og tematiske artikler, fagdebatter og bokanmeldelser. Vi oppmuntrer bidragsytere til å skrive på et av de skandinaviske hovedspråkene – norsk, svensk eller dansk, men tar også i mot tekster skrevet på engelsk. Tidsskriftet har diamant åpen tilgang, noe som innebærer at alt publiseres åpent tilgjengelig, uten publiseringsavgifter.
