Časopis Podzemni radovi vrši publikaciju naučnih i stručnih radova iz oblasti rudarstva, geologije i geonauka. Inicijalno, tematska oblast časopisa bila je vezana isključivo za tehniku i tehnologiju izrade podzemih prostorija. Obzirom da je rudarstvo po sebi kompleksna disciplina, tematska oblast časopisa je proširena kako bi obuhvatila sve aspekte rudarstva, geologije i pratećih geonauka. Shodno tome časopis objavljuje radove iz oblasti podzemne i površinske eksploatacije, izrade podzemnih objekata, rudarskih merenja, eksploatacije nafte i gasa, pripreme mineralnih sirovina, zaštite šivotne sredine i oblasti rudarske mehanizacije. Sa druge strane, objavljuju se i radovi iz opšte i strukturne geologije, hidrogeologije, geotehnike, geofizike i drugih oblasti koje su tematski povezane ili imaju svoju primenu u rudarstvu i geologiji.
