Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences is an interdisciplinary journal that serves as an international forum for publishing research at the intersection of phenomenology, empirical science, and analytic philosophy of mind. While the journal is rooted in the phenomenological tradition, submissions may engage with this tradition in variety of ways. One priority of the journal is to provide a platform for dialogue between analytic and continental philosophy, phenomenology in particular; articles that discuss the work of phenomenological figures or topics in the context of ongoing discussions in areas such as philosophy of mind, philosophy of perception, enactivism, or social ontology are therefore welcomed. Since its inception, the journal also serves as a venue for research at the intersection of phenomenology and the cognitive sciences, broadly construed to include not only psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience, but also other disciplines that investigate processes of knowing, understanding, or sense-making, such as sociology, anthropology, and education. While articles may be purely theoretical, engagement with empirical studies is encouraged. This may include proposing innovative methods or new experimental designs, generating questions or constraints for empirical research, or critically interpreting the results of prior empirical studies. Moreover, in line with a broad understanding of the cognitive sciences and cognition, submissions may engage with empirical studies that use a variety of experimental, quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods. In some cases, the journal may also publish the results of empirical studies. Typically, such studies will be considered only if the results have a clear and immediate bearing on a theoretical debate at the intersection of phenomenology and the cognitive sciences (e.g., by testing a phenomenological hypothesis).
