Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry is published by Royal Society of Chemistry and is in Zone 3 of Chemistry in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Catalytic C–H Functionalization Methods, Chemical Synthesis and Analysis and Asymmetric Synthesis and Catalysis, together about 26.2% of its articles. Its main subfields are Organic Chemistry. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

We welcome research that shows new or significantly improved protocols or methodologies in total synthesis, synthetic methodology or physical and theoretical organic chemistry as well as research that shows a significant advance in the organic chemistry or molecular design aspects of chemical biology, catalysis, supramolecular and macromolecular chemistry, theoretical chemistry, mechanism-oriented physical organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or natural products. Articles published in the journal should report new work which makes a highly-significant impact in the field. Routine and incremental work is generally not suitable for publication in the journal. More details about key areas of our scope are below. In all cases authors should include in their article clear rationale for why their research has been carried out. Read moreOrganic synthesisWe welcome important research in all areas of organic synthesis, including studies on small organic molecules and biomolecules. Total or multistep syntheses should report new or improved strategies or methods, or a more efficient route to the target compound.Methodology studies should show a significant improvement on known methods. Research that extends the known methodology to a different class of compounds is generally not suitable unless that class is significantly different in scope to previously reported methodology. Where methods are directed towards a narrow range of structures, the importance of these targets must be clearly justified.Physical and theoretical organic chemistryWe welcome studies that introduce new models of reactivity, selectivity, bonding or structure as well as new computational methodologies with clear and demonstrable relevance to experimental chemistry. Authors should justify this relevance, ideally by providing experimentally testable predictions arising from their theoretical results. Computational studies should employ methodology that reflects current best practices in the field. Manuscripts that merely reproduce known experimental trends or apply routine methods to limited systems without advancing conceptual understanding are not suitable for OBC. Chemical biologyWe welcome articles that report new or improved methodologies in the chemical aspects of chemical biology, including design, development and use of chemical tools, chemical studies of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids or biological processes such as protein-protein interactions and epigene
