Tímaritið Orð og tunga birtir greinar sem lúta að máli og málfræði. Lögð er áhersla á greinar um orðfræði, þ. á m. nafnfræði og íðorðafræði, og greinar um orðabókafræði og orðabókagerð, sem og fræðilegar greinar um málrækt og málstefnu. Sem dæmi má nefna greinar um tiltekin málfræðileg, málfélagsleg, nafnfræðileg eða orðabókafræðileg viðfangsefni; greinar um einstakar orðabækur eða tegundir orðabóka, íðorðasöfn eða aðrar handbækur; einnig greinar um einkenni og sögu íslensks orða- og nafnaforða eða afmarkaðs hluta hans, jafnvel einstök orð, þ. á m. nýyrði og annað sem lýtur að endurnýjun orðaforðans.
