Основной задачей журнала «Офтальмология» является освящение новейших достижений в области офтальмологии и повышение научной и практической квалификации исследователей и врачей-офтальмологов. Научная концепция издания предполагает публикацию современных достижений во всех областях офтальмологии, включая офтальмопедиатрию, а также и в других разделах медицины, касающихся научно-практических исследований в области генетики, эндокринологии, дерматологии, ревматологии и др. Такой широкий тематический охват позволяет расширить диапазон возможностей диагностики и лечения пациентов офтальмологического профиля. В журнале также публикуются статьи обзорного и теоретического характера как отечественных, так и зарубежных офтальмологов, отражающие основные тенденции в развитии офтальмологической науки, а также обзоры по базовым клиническим, молекулярно-биологическим и генетическим исследованиям в офтальмологии. Позиция редакции состоит в том, что журнал должен быть полезен как для офтальмологов, занимающихся фундаментальными исследованиями, так и для врачей практического профиля. Значимым направлением журнала является информирование об итогах прошедших конгрессов, конференций в России и за рубежом, а также сведения, полученные от ученых советов по защите диссертаций, заседаний офтальмологических обществ, обзоры периодических офтальмологических изданий, монографий, методических рекомендаций и учебной литературы.
