Aim: The New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research is an international journal dedicated to advancing knowledge of aquatic systems, with a focus on marine, estuarine, and freshwater systems of the Southern Hemisphere. The journal serves as a key platform for disseminating high-quality observational, experimental, theoretical, and numerical research that enhances our understanding of aquatic ecosystems and processes. Scope of submissions: We welcome submissions on all aspects of aquatic science across habitats ranging from lakes, streams, and wetlands to rocky shores, fjords, and the open ocean. While we place particular emphasis on the unique and diverse environments of the Southern Hemisphere, the journal also encourages submissions from other regions where the findings offer broader comparative insights or applicability to Southern Hemisphere contexts. We publish original research papers, review articles, short communications, and letters in subject areas including ecology, aquaculture and fisheries, genetics, biodiversity, bioinvasions, physical oceanography, limnology, hydrology, aquatic biotechnology, aquatic chemistry, and the physiology of aquatic species. In addition to regular issues, the journal periodically assembles Special Issues that address emerging themes or pressing questions in aquatic science. We encourage prospective guest editors with proposals for Special Issues to contact the Senior Editor to discuss potential topics and editorial guidelines. Prospective contributors should consult recent issues of the journal and see whether a planned submission is appropriate.
