„Muzyka” jest - zgodnie z nadanym w 1956 roku podtytułem - „kwartalnikiem poświęconym historii i teorii muzyki”, stanowiąc główną w Polsce platformę prezentowania wyników badań muzykologicznych. Choć skupia się na polskiej tradycji muzycznej, w jej rozmaitych kontekstach, to jednak publikuje teksty dotyczące również innych zagadnień, zwłaszcza powiązanych z kulturą muzyczną krajów Europy Środkowej. Kwartalnik otwarty jest na ujęcia interdyscyplinarne łączące studia nad muzyką z historią, literaturoznawstwem, kulturoznawstwem, historią sztuki, etnologią i filozofią. Zawiera obszerny dział recenzji publikacji naukowych.
