La revue Motifs, fondée par l’unité de recherche 4249 « Héritage et création dans le texte et l’image » (UBO, UBS) est une revue scientifique pluridisciplinaire dans le domaine des arts, des lettres et des langues. À l’image de l’équipe de recherche qui la porte, elle publie des travaux principalement en langues française et anglaise, portant sur les arts, la linguistique, la littérature et la civilisation des aires francophone, anglophone, hispanophone et germanophone ; à l’occasion, elle les éclaire par la confrontation avec les productions des civilisations issues d’autres aires linguistiques historiquement ou géographiquement plus lointaines, hellénique, latine ou orientales notamment. Le comité de rédaction privilégie les approches qui questionnent les rapports entre le texte et l’image, qu’il s’agisse du discours accompagnant la démarche créatrice d’un ou une artiste (écriture, dessin, peinture, sculpture, cinéma…), ou de l’influence d’une œuvre plastique ou filmique, comme source ou élément constitutif d’un texte littéraire, narratif ou spéculatif.
