MediaTropes is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal devoted to the critical study of media and mediation. Media are never merely channels or instruments. Media are tropic: as rhetorical figures, they turn, translate, transform, and effect the conditions through which meaning, experience, subjectivity, and collective life become possible. To study media from this perspective is therefore not simply to analyze objects or technologies, but to examine the forms of mediation through which worlds are disclosed, identities are constituted, and publics are assembled. Drawing on traditions of media theory, rhetoric, critical theory, cultural studies, and the humanities, MediaTropespublishes theoretical, interpretive, historical, aesthetic, and cultural scholarship on media and mediation. We are particularly interested in work that attends to the tropological dimensions of mediation and to the ways media shape the horizons of experience, culture, and collective life. The journal welcomes humanities-based and critical approaches to a wide range of historical and contemporary problems of mediation, including but not limited to: Affect, embodiment, identity, and mediated experience Algorithmic governance and computational mediation Cultures of artificial intelligence Digital publics, networked cultures, and collective life Environmental media and planetary crisis Media theory and media archaeology Mediations of race, ethnicity, coloniality, and/or gender Memory, archives, and cultural transmission Posthuman and more-than-human worlds Rhetoric, tropes, and scenes of address Surveillance, datafication, and control Technoculture and everyday life
