Важнейшими задачами журнала являются: обобщение научных и практических достижений в области литейного производства и металлургии, повышение научной и практической квалификации как научных работников, так и представителей промышленности. Научная концепция издания предполагает публикацию современных достижений в области литейного производства и металлургии, включая теоретические работы и математическое моделирование процессов, результатов национальных и международных исследований в данных областях. В журнале освещаются механизмы формирования структуры и свойств отливок как в традиционных технологиях литья, так и при нестационарных условиях затвердевания, а также применение наноматериалов. В журнале публикуются результаты фундаментальных исследований, направленные на ресурсосбережение, получение экономно легированных сталей, отливок из цветных сплавов, обзоры литературы по широкому спектру вопросов производства отливок, катанки и производству корда. Большое значение редакция журнала уделяет вопросам подготовки кадров по специальностям «литейное производство», «металлургия черных, цветных и редких металлов».
