Tematyka obejmuje związane z materialnością zagadnienia z zakresu: - źródłoznawstwa - dziejów: -- osadnictwa -- gospodarki wiejskiej -- rzemiosła i przemysłu -- budownictwa i architektury -- wymiany i pieniądza -- transportu i komunikacji -- konsumpcji -- higieny, medycyny i zdrowotności -- miast -- sztuki wojskowej - metodologii kultury materialnej - metod badawczych - ochrony zabytków - organizacji nauki, muzeów i wystaw - demografii - antropologii - środowiska geograficznego Na łamach czasopisma publikowane są artykuły w języku polskim i w językach kongresowych, zróżnicowane pod względem tematyki oraz formy, a także pozycje o charakterze recenzyjnym i sprawozdawczym. Zamieszczane są one w kilku podstawowych działach: „Studia i Materiały”, „Komunikaty Naukowe”, „Metody badawcze”, „Źródła”, „Polemiki i dyskusje” oraz „Recenzje”, „Sprawozdania i zapiski”, a także „Kronika naukowa” (zob. Lista działów). KHKM stanowi ważną i rozpoznawaną w regionie platformę wymiany intelektualnej.
