The Journal of Veterans Studies (ISSN 2470-4768) is a diamond open-access, peer-reviewed journal. The mission of the Journal of Veterans Studies is to sustain international research in veterans studies, facilitate interdisciplinary research collaborations, and narrow gaps between cultures, institutions, experiences, knowledge, and understanding. Veterans studies is an interdisciplinary field that investigates the embodied, emotional, and material dimensions of veterans lived experience, as well as the production, circulation, and institutionalization of knowledge of veteranhood/veteranness within the broader dynamics of social stratification after they leave the military. In a larger capacity, veterans studies examines how military service shapes individuals and their families, communities, and institutional networks across the full lifecycle of former military affiliation (e.g., pre-service recruitment and socialization, through active duty, to post-service reintegration, aging, and memorialization). It analyzes identity (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status), labor, governance, embodiment, and culture across diverse national and international contexts, with particular attention to systems of power. Veterans studies, by its very nature, may analyze experiences closely tied to military studies, but the emphasis of veterans studies is the “veteran experience.” The work of veterans studies can be found in such fields as Rhetoric and Composition, Literature, History, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Student Affairs, Higher Education, and Humanities (among many others). Additionally, it can be seen in and out of formal education: by current members of the military, leaders of nonprofits, artists, activists, and students taking courses in veterans studies. Such research and work can take multiple forms. It is free to submit to and publish within the journal; we accept multimodal submissions in a variety of formats.
