The Journal of Reproduction and Development (JRD) is an international, peer-reviewed Open Access publication, and the official journal of the Society for Reproduction and Development. In six issues per year, JRD publishes basic studies of reproductive biology in vertebrates, including gametogenesis, early embryonic development, placenta development, implantation, reproductive endocrine function and reproductive organ development. JRD also welcomes applied and clinical studies that contribute to the control of reproduction in wild, domestic and laboratory animals, and to the development of new technology to address issues in the field of reproduction. Human clinical case reports are not published by the journal. Editor‘s picks Cover Story: Maternal nutrition influences not only milk production in dairy cows; it also plays a critical role in postpartum reproductive performance and offspring development. The nutritional and metabolic status of cows during gestation and the transition period influences postpartum ovarian function, uterine involution, and subsequent fertility, while also affecting placental development, fetal nutrient supply, offspring metabolism, and the establishment of the ovarian reserve. This review integrates findings from a series of studies demonstrating that nutritional interventions, including β-carotene and rumen-protected lysine supplementation, improve postpartum reproductive recovery and offspring health (Kawashima: Studies on gestational factors affecting postpartum reproductive performance in dairy cows and the health and reproductive potential of their offspring. pp. 574–580). These findings highlight that nutritional management should aim not only to improve postpartum fertility and productivity of the dam but also to optimize the lifelong health and reproductive potential of the offspring.
