Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Journal of Product Innovation Management is published by Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd and is in Zone 1 of Management in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition, Top journal). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Innovation and Knowledge Management, Innovation Diffusion and Forecasting and Business Strategy and Innovation, together about 38.3% of its articles. Its main subfields are Strategy and Management. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

JPIM publishes original articles on organizations of all types and sizes (start-ups, small to medium enterprises, large corporations, public and non-profit) and from the consumer, business-to-business, and policy domains. The journal is receptive to all types of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Authors across the world from diverse disciplines and functional perspectives are welcome to submit to the journal. JPIM publishes three types of articles. JPIM Articles Original Research articles published in JPIM generate meaningful insights into innovation management. These studies may draw on a wide variety of data sources and methodological approaches, including conceptual studies, experiments, surveys, field studies, case research, archival data, and advanced analytics. What unites these contributions is their relevance to innovation management theory and practice —whether focusing on individual, organizational, or ecosystem-level phenomena. JPIM values rigorously conducted research that offers novel theoretical contributions, robust methodology, and clear implications for innovation scholars and practitioners. Catalyst is a section of the journal featuring carefully selected essays intended to inspire and stimulate new thinking on innovation management. We are specifically interested in novel, interpretive reflections and prospections of either academics or practitioners on a variety of innovation management themes (which may include new methodological approaches). This category aims to publish essays that are interesting and provocative, not necessarily conforming to standard knowledge paradigms. Hence, Catalyst essays seek to generate new debates and discussions in innovation management. The essays can be subjective in nature, with authors expressing opinions, but should be rooted in experience or past scholarship. Manuscripts submitted for this category are reviewed by the Editors-in-Chief. Detailed submission guidelines for "Catalyst" articles are posted on the journal's website here. Review is a section within the journal featuring review articles that provide a synthesis and critical appraisal of a particular research stream within innovation management. More specifically, we seek Review articles that meet the following criteria: (a) review, synthesize and interpret relevant prior research, (b) integrate relevant research in, for example, a conceptual framework or model, and (c) highlight important theoretical directions for future inquiries.
