(generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
The Journal of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (JMCDA) was launched in 1992, with an explanatory byline ‘Optimization, Learning and Decision Support’ added with a restructuring of the editorial board in 2009. From the outset, JMCDA aimed to be the repository of choice for papers covering all aspects of MCDA (Multicriteria decision analysis or aid) and MCDM (multicriteria decision making), while the explicit link to multiobjective optimization was emphasized in the amplified title. The journal provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of all aspects of research, application and evaluation of multicriteria decision analysis, and publishes material from a variety of disciplines and all schools of thought. Papers addressing mathematical, theoretical, algorithmic and behavioural aspects of MCDA/MCDM are welcome, but should be well-motivated by explicit decision making contexts. Papers describing case studies or a series of real applications are particularly sought, but strong emphasis should be placed on problem structuring, interaction with decision makers and interpretation of results. Mere numerical examples of MCDA/MCDM methods will not typically be sufficient. Surveys and authoritative reviews are also welcome, but should be more than bibliometric summaries. We look for novel interpretations and classifications to enhance MCDA/MCDM theory and practice. In order to facilitate the editorial process, seven topic areas within the general field of MCDA / MCDM / Multiobjective optimization have been defined, and Area Editors appointed for each. From 2025, the journal has established a full editorial board who are supporting the area editors in evaluating the submissions. The areas currently are (alphabetical order): Evolutionary multiobjective optimization: Because evolutionary algorithms are population-based, they are able to identify, in a single algorithm run, a representative set of Pareto-optimal solutions which can be presented to a decision maker (DM) to choose from. We welcome studies that link evolutionary multiobjective optimization to decision making, either by allowing specification of partial preferences before optimization, by supporting DMs to choose the best solution after optimization, or by involving the DM interactively during optimization. Multi-attribute value / utility theory: Interdisciplinary studies that further the theory and practice of multi-attribute value and utility models, highlighting as well behavioura
