Journal of Mathematics and Music aims to advance the use of mathematical modelling and computation in music theory. The Journal focuses on mathematical approaches to musical structures and processes, including mathematical investigations into music-theoretic or compositional issues as well as mathematically motivated analyses of musical works or performances. In consideration of the deep unsolved ontological and epistemological questions concerning knowledge about music, the Journal is open to a broad array of methodologies and topics, particularly those outside of established research fields such as acoustics, sound engineering, auditory perception, linguistics etc. Three issues of the Journal are published per annual volume, with one issue devoted exclusively to a single topic. The online edition of the Journal provides extended material in the form of sound files, applets, or similar electronic media. The journal publishes the following broad areas and article types: Research Article: Article reporting on primary research. Will normally contain an abstract and references. May also contain figures, tables, footnotes. Note: Encompasses a range of short contributions narrowly focused on a specific research subject or aspect of professional practice. Book Review: Review or analysis of one or more printed or online books. Meeting Report: Report of a conference, symposium, or meeting. Editorial: Opinion piece, policy statement, or general commentary, typically written by editorial officers of the journal or a guest contributor. Obituary: Announcement of a death, or the appreciation for a colleague who has recently died. Special Issues are collections of articles focused on a theme, and proposals are welcome and can be sent by prospective Guest Editors to the Editor-in-Chief. The Journal encourages submissions from authors of all backgrounds regardless of career stage, geography, gender, ethnicity, or any other defining characteristic. Readership The Journal of Mathematics and Music is intended to serve the communities of music scholars, composers, mathematicians and computer scientists, particularly those with interdisciplinary interests. The Journal assumes a certain level of proficiency in these fields, appropriate to professionals and graduate students. To join the SMCM, please visit http://www.smcm-net.info/.
