Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering is published by American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and is in Zone 2 of Engineering in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Geotechnical Engineering and Underground Structures, Geotechnical Engineering and Soil Stabilization and Geotechnical Engineering and Soil Mechanics, together about 53.9% of its articles. Its main subfields are Civil and Structural Engineering. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

The Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering covers the broad area of practice known as geotechnical engineering. Papers are welcomed on topics such as foundations, retaining structures, excavations, ground improvement, groundwater control and dewatering, geotechnical aspects of tunnelling, engineering behavior of soil and rock, site characterization, slope stability, dams, rock engineering, soil dynamics, earthquake engineering, environmental geotechnics, geosynthetics, computer modeling, groundwater monitoring and restoration, and coastal and offshore geotechnical engineering. Authors are also encouraged to submit papers on new and emerging topics within the general discipline of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. Theoretical papers are welcomed, but there should be a clear and significant potential for practical application of the theory. Practice-oriented papers and case studies are particularly welcomed and encouraged. The Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering encourages authors to make data and/or code underlying their results openly available in a recognized public repository, to support transparency and reproducibility. For studies involving machine learning models and other complex models that are not fully reproducible from the information and equations provided in the manuscript, authors are strongly encouraged to share code and/or training datasets. If data cannot be shared due to proprietary, confidentiality, or licensing constraints, authors should clearly state these limitations. ASCE Publishing provides guidance on suitable repositories in the Journals section of the ASCE Author Center on the ASCE Publishing website. ASCE strives to advance research across civil engineering and related disciplines that will help inform, develop, and inspire sustainable action. We therefore encourage authors to categorize their research using at least one of the Sustainable Development Goals identified by the United Nations.

APC and open-access policy

Hybrid open accessLetPub

A subscription journal in which authors can pay to publish their article open access.

No source has fee information yet; check the journal's website.

A hybrid journal charges the APC only when the author chooses open access; publishing under the subscription model is usually free.

The journal's website is authoritative for fees; sources were observed at different times and each keeps its own value, without averaging.
