Scope
Aims, scope and focus
Journal of Dynamic Behavior of Materials is published by Springer Nature and is in Zone 4 of Materials Science in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are High-Velocity Impact and Material Behavior, Structural Response to Dynamic Loads and Energetic Materials and Combustion, together about 47.3% of its articles. Its main subfields are Mechanics of Materials. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
The Journal of Dynamic Behavior of Materials is an archival, peer-reviewed publication dedicated to advancing the science and engineering of material and structural responses under time-dependent conditions. While maintaining a strong focus on materials subjected to extreme environments—such as high and low strain rates, extreme temperatures, large plastic deformations, and high pressures—the journal also welcomes submissions that address deformation processes with larger characteristic timescales, including low-velocity impacts and progressive deformation phenomena. The journal covers a wide range of both experimental and theoretical work, as well as modeling and simulation and interdisciplinary research aimed at an advanced understanding of time-dependent material properties. Papers dealing with state-of-the-art experimental techniques are especially encouraged, such as high-strain-rate testing methods (for example, Hopkinson pressure bar, gas-gun, powder-gun, laser or explosive-driven experiments, drop-tower, etc.), high-pressure techniques (for example, pressure cells, diamond anvil cells, shock wave experiments, etc.) and state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques including time-resolved radiography and advanced velocimetry (PDV, mPDV, VISAR, lineVISAR). Furthermore, the journal plans to publish manuscripts related to the developed material modeling techniques such as FEM and MD, together with other computational methodologies. Investigations related to the implementation and improvement of these models in order to represent correctly complex behaviors of materials under dynamic and time-varying situations will be highly valued. Of particular interest are submissions related to multiscale modeling, which connects simulations at different length scales with continuum mechanics, and new computational approaches for predicting material behaviors under extreme conditions, such as high strain rate, pressure, and temperature. In addition to original research communications, the Journal of Dynamic Behavior of Materials welcomes review articles, technical notes, and application-based papers that highlight key advances and recent developments in the field. Hybrid studies combining experimental and computational aspects are especially welcomed, since they yield an integrated perspective which bridges test results with predictive simulation toward solving the dynamic and time-dependent response of materials under different conditions.
