Scope
Aims, scope and focus
Journal of Computational Neuroscience is published by Springer US and is in Zone 4 of Medicine in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Neural dynamics and brain function, Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology Research and stochastic dynamics and bifurcation, together about 49.5% of its articles. Its main subfields are Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience and Cognitive Neuroscience. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
The Journal of Computational Neuroscience publishes original research articles, rapid communications, software papers, perspectives and reviews that advance understanding of: How neural systems process information How the brain and nervous system function Mechanisms underlying neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders How machine learning algorithms provide new insights into brain function and neurological disorders How neuromodulation techniques change brain activity and might restore healthy function Scope and Focus We welcome studies that develop or apply computational models including applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning, to illuminate neural mechanisms at all scales—from molecules, cells, populations, to circuits, systems, cognition, and behavior. Research that tightly integrates modeling with experimental, biological or patient data is especially encouraged, as is work that tests computational hypotheses through innovative experimental design. Innovative and Emerging Approaches To support progress across this rapidly evolving field, we invite submissions that introduce or apply: New computational or theoretical models that open unexplored directions in brain‑function research Innovative uses of imaging, electrophysiology, biophysics, or molecular tools with clear computational interpretation Methodological or analytical advances—including new data‑analysis techniques or experimental paradigms—that provide explanatory insight into neural computation Studies on the computational basis of neurological or neuropsychiatric disorders Recent advancements in software for modeling neural dynamics Brain computer interfaces and neurotechnology Methodology papers should demonstrate how the approach yields new biological, computational or therapeutic insight. Our Mission The journal aims to represent all levels of investigation relevant to computational neuroscience. We particularly encourage submissions from authors working in emerging, interdisciplinary, and fast‑moving areas of the field. Prospective authors who are unsure of whether their manuscript is in the scope of the Journal are encouraged to contact the Editor in Chief prior to submission.

A subscription journal in which authors can pay to publish their article open access.
