Journal of Applied Volcanology is an international journal dedicated to applied research on volcanism and its wide‑ranging interactions with society. Volcanic risks serve as entry points into much larger questions about how societies understand, prepare for, and live with extreme environmental hazards. Understanding and managing volcanic risk therefore leads to insights of broader significance into the health, social, economic, cultural, environmental, and institutional dimensions of vulnerability and resilience. In this context, caring about volcanology means caring about public safety, livelihoods, ecosystems, and long‑term societal wellbeing. The journal provides a platform for research that advances these goals by limiting the impacts of volcanic activity on communities, infrastructure, environments, and economies. Recognising that real‑world volcanic risk is complex, interconnected, and often embedded within broader multi‑hazard environments, the journal welcomes mono‑, multi‑, inter‑ and transdisciplinary research spanning the natural sciences, health sciences, social sciences, humanities, engineering, and policy domains. This includes studies focused directly on volcanic processes and hazards, as well as research addressing related or cascading threats such as volcanic tsunamis, landslides, debris avalanches, or volcanic health impacts, compound hazard scenarios and lessons from other hazard contexts. The journal is structured around a set of broad, interconnected areas of application that reflect how volcanism intersects with health, societal systems, and environmental risk. These areas are intended as thematic entry points rather than strict disciplinary boundaries and include: Environment, climate, ecosystem and agriculture impacts, including hazard and risk models and footprints, effects on landscapes, biodiversity, soils, water, climate processes, crops, livestock, fisheries, food systems, and rural livelihoods. Environmental and public health, encompassing physical health, psychological wellbeing, social stress, occupational health, and health-system impacts related to volcanic hazards Critical infrastructure and the built environment, including transport, aviation, and supply chains, engineering challenges, infrastructure and lifeline vulnerability, exposure, and resilience Technology, data science, and innovation, including monitoring systems, modelling, early warning, decision support, data‑driven risk reduction, and management and understa
