A folyóirat célja Ámbár a világban léteznek szemantikai és pragmatikai témájú cikkeket megjelentető igen színvonalas folyóiratok, s ámbár Magyarországon is vannak elsősorban szemantikával vagy pragmatikával foglalkozó kutatók, kifejezetten szemantikai-pragmatikai profilú magyar nyelvű folyóirat pillanatnyilag nem létezik. Egy ilyen folyóirat tehát hiánypótló jelentőségű a hazai nyelvészeti kutatásokban. Két alapvető céllal indítjuk most útjára ezt az elektronikus folyóiratot. Egyrészt azért, hogy a hazai és a határon túli nyelvész és érdeklődő nem nyelvész szakemberek tudjanak hová fordulni, ha ezekhez a tudományterületekhez tartozó tudományos cikkeket magyar nyelven szeretnének olvasni. Másrészt az a célunk, hogy az ország különböző egyetemein többé-kevésbé elszigetelten dolgozó szakembereknek magyar nyelvű szakfolyóiratban is olyan publikálási lehetőséget biztosítsunk, ahol a publikációknak elsősorban a nemzetközi szemantikai és pragmatikai kutatásokban meglévő normákhoz kell igazodniuk. A folyóirattól, csakúgy, mint a szintén a magyar nyelvű szemantikai és pragmatikai kutatások összefogását célzó Pragmatika Centrumtól azt várjuk, hogy az ezeken a területeken dolgozó hazai és határon túli kutatók jobban megismerhessék egymás gondolatait, s ezáltal a tudományos együttműködés lehetőségei is bővüljenek. Ezt a kapcsolati bővülést akár nemzetközi szinten is elősegítheti ez a magyar nyelvű folyóirat, hiszen általa nemzetközi adatbázisokba is bekerülnek rövid angol nyelvű információk a publikáló kutatókról s a megjelenő tanulmányokról. Ehhez a Szegedi Tudományegyetem kiváló könyvtáros szakembereinek a segítsége a garancia. A tudományos színvonal garanciáját pedig a szigorú lektorálási folyamat biztosítja: minden beküldött tanulmányt két szakemberrel lektoráltat a folyóirat szerkesztősége, s csak a lektori véleményeknek megfelelő, illetve azoknak megfelelően átírt tanulmányokat jelentetjük meg.
