Italianist is published by Taylor & Francis and is in Zone 4 of Literature in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). Founded in 1981, The Italianist is today one of the leading international journals of Italian Studies and a key point of reference within the field. The journal does not approach Italy as a bounded object of study defined by immovable features of nationhood, but rather as a laboratory for examining wider cultural, historical, linguistic, and political processes and transformations. It is committed to intellectual openness and interdisciplinary exchange and is distinguished by both its conceptual range and its methodological innovation. The Italianist places medieval and early modern philology in productive tension with contemporary critical theory; literary studies with visual and screen cultures; linguistics with sociology and history; and Italian traditions with transnational and global perspectives. In doing so, the journal does not simply respond to the reconfiguration of the Humanities and Modern Languages but contributes to a redefining of Italian Studies. It responds to contemporary institutional pressures and the present conjuncture as opportunities for conceptual innovation and disciplinary renewal rather than symptoms of crisis. Alongside peer-reviewed research articles, the journal offers a set of editorial formats that extend scholarly exchange beyond conventional academic frames. These include interviews with contemporary writers, artists, and intellectuals; concise critical responses to topics of contemporary urgency; and reflections on research trajectories within the field. Together, these strands create a flexible intellectual space attuned to forms of scholarly production that exceed traditional academic boundaries and conventions. Since 2009, the annual Film Issue has consolidated a major international forum for Italian screen studies, expanding its scope to include television, digital media, and global circulation. Alongside the General Issue and the Film Issue, the journal also publishes an annual Themed Issue selected through a competitive process and curated by guest editors. Themed issues respond to timely, emerging, and critical areas of inquiry, including, in recent years, ecocriticism, digital interdisciplinarity, and the Spectral Turn. Publishing in both English and Italian, The Italianist fosters dialogue across linguistic and scholarly communities while addressing an increasingly global readership. Within an evolving landscape of knowledge production and circulation, the journal engages digital modes of dissemination and emerg
