Investigaciones Geográficas publica artículos originales de alta calidad que abarcan todos los campos de la Geografía física y humana, buscando que sus contribuciones revelen procesos territoriales e integren -de preferencia- variables tanto ambientales como sociales. Las lenguas de publicación son el español y el inglés. Las contribuciones de la revista dan cuenta del desarrollo histórico, económico y cultural del paisaje o del territorio y de fenómenos geofísicos que afectan a las comunidades humanas. Interesan escritos que provengan de investigaciones teóricas o empíricas y que analicen el espacio tanto de manera verbal como gráfica. Se considera que los mapas son importantes en la representación geográfica y se aprecia el uso de geotecnologías como herramientas de la investigación. Investigaciones Geográficas se dirige a profesionales de la Geografía y de disciplinas interesadas en el análisis social y ambiental. Pretende incidir en las intervenciones sobre el territorio con un enfoque sostenible y ser una publicación de consulta en materia de políticas públicas. En algunos números, está previsto que el Consejo editorial abra una convocatoria para publicar artículos sobre alguna temática específica dentro de una sección ex profeso. Así mismo, la revista publica reseñas de libros recientes que se consideren relevantes para las y los interesados en la Geografía. Investigaciones Geográficas se publica de manera cuatrimestral los primeros días de abril, agosto y diciembre. Es financiada por el Instituto de Geografía de la UNAM y no cobra por el procesamiento de los artículos. Todos los números publicados son de acceso abierto.
