Publicación cuatrimestral con números editados en febrero, junio y octubre. Fue fundada en 1988 por el Departamento de Historia Contemporánea (UPV-EHU), y desde 2018 la dirigió José Mª Beascoechea. Desde 2025 la dirige Eduardo J. Alonso Olea. Acoge estudios académicos, originales e inéditos, en español e inglés sobre historia contemporánea en sus distintas vertientes y metodologías. Admite dosieres monográficos y publica recensiones de libros de la especialidad. Esta revista no tiene cargos por procesamiento de artículos (APC) o envío. La revista HISTORIA CONTEMPORÁNEA está reconocida con el sello de calidad de la Fundación para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT), y se encuentra recogida e indexada en: Scopus, ESCI, DOAJ, Fuente Académica Plus, American History and Live, Historical Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, IPSA, País International, ISOC, MLA, Political Sciencie Complete y WPSA.
