Aims, scope and focus
HEREDITAS is published by BioMed Central and is in Zone 4 of Biology in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Chromosomal and Genetic Variations, Botanical Research and Chemistry and Plant Reproductive Biology, together about 30.8% of its articles. Its main subfields are Plant Science and Ecology, Evolution, Behavior and Systematics. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
Hereditas is an open access, peer-reviewed journal, and the official publication of the Mendelian Society of Lund, dedicated to advancing genetics and genomics research across human and animal. Building on a century-long legacy in genetics, the journal publishes high-quality research spanning fundamental discoveries, evolutionary insights, and applied studies that impact medicine and biotechnology. We welcome submissions that shed light on inheritance, genetic diversity, molecular mechanisms, and application of genome-scale technologies. Areas of Interest 1. Medical and clinical genetics Studies of genetic and epigenetic alterations underlying human disease, including cancer genetics, hereditary syndromes, pharmacogenomics, and diagnostic or prognostic applications of genomics. This area emphasizes clinically relevant discoveries that advance diagnosis, risk stratification, and patient management. 2. Regulatory genomics and non-coding RNAs Investigations into non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs, as well as other regulatory elements that govern gene expression in health, and human diseases. These studies advance understanding of complex regulatory networks at the genomic level. 3. Genomic technologies and data science Research employing high-throughput sequencing, genome-wide association studies, functional and population genomics, integrative multi-omics, and bioinformatics approaches to explore genetic diversity in human diseases. Computational predictions and models need to be confirmed with experimental validation performed in vitro or in vivo to ensure biological relevance. 4. Gene therapy and genomic medicine Studies on gene-based therapeutic interventions, including CRISPR technologies, RNA-based therapies, delivery systems, and clinical applications of gene editing. This theme reflects the transition from genetic diagnosis to treatment of human diseases for personalized medicine. 5. Plant genetics and genomics Studies on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying plant development, adaptation, and evolution, including molecular and classical genetics, cytogenetics, population genomics, and genome organization in wild and cultivated species. This scope includes research on plant domestication, breeding, stress responses, and genetic diversity, with relevance to agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental change.
