Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Geobiology is published by Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd and is in Zone 3 of Earth Sciences in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Paleontology and Stratigraphy of Fossils, Microbial Community Ecology and Physiology and Geology and Paleoclimatology Research, together about 41.1% of its articles. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

Aims and Scope The field of geobiology explores the relationship between life and the Earth's physical and chemical environment. Geobiology, launched in 2003, aims to provide a natural home for geobiological research, allowing the cross-fertilization of critical ideas, and promoting cooperation and advancement in this emerging field. We also aim to provide you with a forum for the rapid publication of your results in an international journal of high standing. We are particularly interested in papers crossing disciplines and containing both geological and biological elements, emphasizing the co-evolutionary interactions between life and its physical environment over geological time. Geobiology invites submission of high-quality articles in the following areas: Origins and evolution of life Co-evolution of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere The sedimentary rock record and geobiology of critical intervals Paleobiology and evolutionary ecology Biogeochemistry and global elemental cycles Microbe-mineral interactions Biomarkers Molecular ecology and phylogenetics Benefits of Publishing in Geobiology Geobiology offers as standard practice double-blind reviewing, in which both authors and reviewers are anonymous to each other. This feature, while new to this area of science, is usual in other rapidly progressing and highly competitive disciplines. We supply this service to ensure the highest quality publication procedures, whereby all submitted manuscripts receive equal treatment and all criticism is truly free and fair. However, authors or reviewers wishing to waive their anonymity may do so. We offer a commitment to timely publication, with an average of 40 days time from submission to first decision, and a subsequent 4 to 6 weeks till on-line publication. Geobiology now publishes various formats, including (1) standard length research "Articles", (2) short format "Reports" on new research of broad significance, (3) "Perspectives" that are opinion pieces on current or future directions in the field, and (4) "Reviews" that provide up-to-date and comprehensive summaries on topics of geobiological interest.
