Forma y Función está adscrita al Departamento de Lingüística de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, sede Bogotá. La revista tiene como objetivo la divulgación de estudios sobre el lenguaje desde una variedad de perspectivas teóricas y metodológicas que se inscriben en los diversos campos de la lingüística: lingüística descriptiva, tipológica, histórica y comparativa, dialectología, documentación lingüística, semiótica, análisis del discurso, psicolingüística, etnolingüística, sociolingüística, textolingüística, filosofía del lenguaje, lexicografía, traductología, pragmática, semántica, etnografía de la comunicación, lingüística aplicada y filología. Forma y Función busca servir como vehículo de expresión y difusión de los resultados de las investigaciones básicas y aplicadas en temas variados, tales como: la estructuración, el funcionamiento y el cambio de los sistemas lingüísticos y semióticos; las relaciones entre lenguaje, sociedad, cultura y pensamiento; la variabilidad y diversidad lingüística, el multilingüismo y el bilingüismo; las prácticas discursivas y las construcciones textuales; los procesos de adquisición, el aprendizaje de lenguas y de la lectura-escritura; las políticas lingüísticas; la equivalencia traductora, la producción y recepción del texto traducido, la relevancia de la tipología textual para la traducción; la fijación del texto en los estudios de filología clásica, el texto en su contexto desde la perspectiva filológica, la filología y los estudios interdisciplinarios; la ética de la comunicación humana y en los sistemas informativos automáticos; la comunicación desde la perspectiva semiótica contemporánea y el problema de la transición de los medios masivos de comunicación a las denominadas «redes sociales». Teniendo en cuenta la rica diversidad lingüística colombiana y en aras de su visibilización, se concede particular interés a la difusión de investigaciones sobre lenguas nativas de nuestro país, pero también de otras latitudes. Tal variedad refleja la diversidad de temas y enfoques de trabajo de los profesores del Departamento de Lingüística de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Esta publicación (vigente y continua desde 1981) constituye un importante repositorio de la producción científica en el área, que no solo aporta al bagaje de conocimientos sobre la complejidad del lenguaje, sino que también proporciona materiales para la formación disciplinar de futuros profesionales.
