Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Flow Turbulence and Combustion is published by Springer Netherlands and is in Zone 3 of Engineering in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Fluid Dynamics and Turbulent Flows, Combustion and flame dynamics and Advanced Combustion Engine Technologies, together about 42.8% of its articles. Its main subfields are Computational Mechanics. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

Flow, Turbulence and Combustion provides a global forum for the publication of original and innovative research results that contribute to the solution of fundamental and applied problems encountered in single-phase, multi-phase and reacting flows, in both idealized and real systems. The scope of coverage encompasses topics in fluid dynamics, scalar transport, multi-physics interactions and flow control. From time to time the journal publishes Special or Theme Issues featuring invited articles. Contributions may report research that falls within the broad spectrum of analytical, computational and experimental methods. This includes research conducted in academia, industry and a variety of environmental and geophysical sectors. While turbulence, transition and associated phenomena are likely to feature in most of the papers published in the journal, contributions on non-turbulent flows, typical of those in micro-fluidic devices, around micro-UAVs, over insect and bird wings, in bio-medical application and in small-scale chemical-processing equipment, fall within the scope covered by the journal and are welcome. The emphasis is on originality, timeliness, quality and thematic fit, as exemplified by the title of the journal and the qualifications described above. Relevance to real-world problems and industrial applications are regarded as strengths. In addition to full-length papers, the submission of fast-track short communications of no more than 6 printed pages is encouraged. These may report new results, address contentious topics or contain discussions of full-length papers previously published in the journal. Short communications will benefit from rapid review and publication. Final decisions on revised communications will be taken by two editors, not by the original reviewers. If major revisions are requested, the short communication will subsequently be progressed like a standard manuscript. Founded in 1948 as Applied Scientific Research, the journal has evolved from reporting general research results to its present focus on turbulent flows and related topics. The title Flow, Turbulence and Combustion, adopted in 1998, reflects this thematic inclination and focus. Flow, Turbulence and Combustion is published in association with ERCOFTAC – the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion. ERCOFTAC is an active worldwide association of universities, research institutes and industries collaborating in the area of fluid mechanics and com
