ESCENA. Revista de las artes es una revista de periodicidad semestral y publicación continua, de carácter internacional y editada en el Instituto de Investigaciones en Arte (IIArte) de la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Su propósito fundamental es publicar y divulgar resultados de investigaciones académicas del ámbito de las artes en general, así como documentos inéditos relacionados, con la finalidad de generar y promover el conocimiento en esta área específica. Está dirigida a investigadores, profesores, artistas, amantes del arte y público en general. La revista publica, asimismo, testimonios personales de personas creadoras, producciones artísticas tales como obras de arte visual, partituras, textos literarios, entre otros. Es importante aclarar que se publican investigaciones literarias, en caso de que estas tengan un enfoque comparativo con otras artes.
