Engaging Science, Technology, and Society (ESTS), published by the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), is a fully open-access, digital-only journal that publishes articles across the breadth of Science and Technology Studies (STS). As an open-access and a generalist publication, ESTS’s emphasis is on articles that draw connections across multiple subfields, topical foci, theoretical traditions, and/or geographic and cultural contexts of STS. The journal’s mission includes continuing to recognize and build STS as a transnational field, and supporting openness as both a principle/concept and a practice, while providing a hospitable publication venue for scholars from across STS. ESTS is particularly interested in publishing works that contribute to and/or take advantage of its mission of openness, whether through contributing to open data repositories, embodying open approaches to writing (e.g., through unconventional/counter-normative co-authorship practices), or experimenting with form and style. We also expressly invite articles by authors based in and/or with connections to regions outside of STS’s historic centers in Europe, the UK, and North America. We welcome articles that address geographic and cultural equity and accessibility as we actively work out what it means to be a “transnational” journal today. ESTS expects all articles that it publishes to speak to a broad STS audience. We seek contributions that are likely to be useful and interesting to many readers irrespective of their specific topical interests, theoretical frameworks, or disciplinary backgrounds.
