Aims, scope and focus
Energy Ecology and Environment is published by Joint Center on Global Change and Earth System Science of the University of Maryland and Beijing Normal University and is in Zone 3 of Environmental Science & Ecology in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Environmental Impact and Sustainability, Energy, Environment, Economic Growth and Energy and Environment Impacts, together about 27.3% of its articles. Its main subfields are Biomedical Engineering. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
The rising concern about a potential global energy crisis and its impact on the economy and environment calls for a transition from the current development paradigm to a sustainable one. Such a transition poses a significant challenge for scientists, industries and governments requiring innovative energy and environmental policies to save energy and reduce environmental and social impacts. Management towards a low carbon future needs to be cognizant of the social, cultural, and institutional as well as the biophysical and geographical context within which it takes place taking advantage of the synergies provided by ecosystem services and technological regimes developing nature-inspired production and consumption systems. There is already plenty of literature on these problems, along with an abundance of journals with disciplinary territories and sharp boundaries on the intellectual landscape. However, we need a problem-oriented forum, transcending disciplinary boundaries, for putting the pieces together promoting informed discussions of an integrated vision of a sustainable human and natural world. Energy, Ecology and Environment (E3) is a cross-discipline forum for investigating the energy production and its impacts on ecosystems and environment, sustainable management of natural resources, climate change mitigation and adaption, and big data applications in energy and environmental spheres. Preference is given to papers from theoretical, observational and experimental research having cross and interdisciplinary aspects on following themes at field, landscape, regional or global level. Energy engineering and innovation for sustainability Advanced energy storage and applications Environmental pollution and ecological remediation Climate dynamics, adaptation, and mitigation Climate change and public health Emission reduction, carbon captures and storage Smart management of natural resources Biodiversity and ecosystem services across energy transition Environmental, economic, and societal trade-offs Big data applications in multiple spheres Sustainable nanotechnology
