ECOSISTEMAS publica trabajos experimentales, teóricos y descriptivos sobre ecología y medio ambiente en sentido amplio. Son bienvenidos artículos focalizados en diferentes escalas (p.ej. organismos, poblaciones, comunidades, o ecosistemas), con diferentes aproximaciones (p.ej. paleoecología, ecofisiología, ecología funcional, ecología de la conservación o eco-evolución) y en diferentes ambientes (p.ej. Terrestre, acuático, etc.). ECOSISTEMAS también abarca metaciencia (ciencia sobre cómo hacemos ciencia) sobre ecología. Se aceptan artículos de investigación, revisiones, y artículos de datos sobre investigación ecológica, desde organismos a ecosistemas, así como trabajos que expresen ideas y conceptos emergentes con una sólida base científica, que hayan superado el proceso de revisión por pares. Los artículos regulares se aceptan tanto en español como en inglés. ECOSISTEMAS también publica números especiales o monográficos y notas en español acerca de temas de interés en ecología. ECOSISTEMAS se publica y se lee gratuitamente, gracias al compromiso de la AEET con el principio de ciencia abierta.
