Aims, scope and focus
Ecological Monographs is published by Wiley-Blackwell and is in Zone 2 of Environmental Science & Ecology in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Ecology and Vegetation Dynamics Studies, Plant and animal studies and Rangeland and Wildlife Management, together about 34.4% of its articles. Its main subfields are Ecology. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
Ecological Monographs recognizes that ecology and evolution are fundamentally linked and therefore welcomes work situated at their interface. Papers published to the journal cover a wide variety of topics and disciplines including, but not limited to, population, community, ecosystem, and macro-ecology, as well as molecular and evolutionary ecology. Work published in the journal elucidates first principles in ecology and evolution, and the ecological and evolutionary consequences of climate change, pollution, habitat modification and biological invasions. Ecological Monographs publishes papers targeting a general audience, and clearly demonstrating the main contribution to fundamental or applied sciences and/or implications for the mitigation of pressing global environmental issues and/or general applications for knowledge users. Submitted manuscripts should be polished and written in language that is accessible to non-specialists. Presubmission inquiries to the Editorial Office are encouraged for the following submission types: Review; Method; Concepts & Synthesis. Presubmission inquiries are mandatory for submissions to the Monograph section. A presubmission inquiry must contain a short summary with no more than 300 words that describes the rationale and/or main findings of the manuscript and highlights its new insights. Figures (1 or 2) can be included in presubmission inquiries but are optional. Please do include a short list of 5 to 10 references that indicate the intended scope of the manuscript. Method Section In the Method section of Ecological Monographs, we aim to publish novel methods that conceptually advance our understanding of the fundamental processes and patterns that structure ecological systems across scales of biological organization from individuals to populations, communities, and ecosystems. We are especially interested in papers that present new methods, demonstrate their efficacy through analytical solutions and/or simulations, present example empirical applications, and have accompanying open-source code that will promote their uptake by the broader ecological community. We encourage submissions of a broad array of newly developed methods, including in theory, statistics, machine learning, and/or data collection, with the criterion that manuscripts should be of interest to a diverse ecological audience and should advance our basic understanding of the natural world. Method manuscripts should balance both technicality and accessibi
