A transdisciplinary, open-access science journal, Earth's Future examines the state of the planet and its inhabitants, sustainable and resilient societies, and the predictions of our common future. The journal assesses the challenges and opportunities of an era where humans dominate Earth’s environment, resources, and ecosystems. It publishes peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and commentaries in areas that include water, air, food, energy, hazards, climate and weather, ecosystems, human well-being and demographics, among others. Contributions focus on Earth as an interconnected, evolving system to inform researchers, policy makers, and the public on the science of the Anthropocene. In addition to general submissions across this broad range of topics, Earth's Future highlights several Thematic Areas that represent emerging frontiers for transdisciplinary research. These areas, defined below, provide a framework for collaboration and community building while maintaining the journal’s open scope. They are focal points for growth and integration, not boundaries, and may evolve as the field and the journal continue to advance. Submissions on any topic within the journal’s broad mission remain fully welcome. Climate Impacts: Advances in the understanding of Earth’s climate system in the context of human and ecological impacts. This thematic area welcomes disciplinary progress in atmospheric, oceanic, cryospheric, and biospheric sciences when they explicitly connect to societal consequences, adaptation and mitigation strategies, policy solutions, and/or decision-relevant knowledge. Contributions that integrate across scales, disciplines, or sectors are especially encouraged. Communities and Resilience: The manner by which urban, rural, and coastal communities interact with the Earth system in ways that shape their vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability. This thematic area includes integrative studies that examine exposure to natural hazards, the role of infrastructure and institutions, and biophysical and socio-economic pathways for adaptation and transformation. Contributions may range from disciplinary advances in hazard science to transdisciplinary assessments of how communities and environments compete, conflict, cope, and co-evolve under global change to meet essential needs such as water and food. Sustainable Resource Systems: Research addressing the sustainable use and management of Earth’s natural resources, including energy, water, food, and critic
