Earth System Dynamics (ESD) is a not-for-profit international scientific journal dedicated to the publication and public discussion of studies investigating the functioning of the Earth system and global change. The scope of ESD is flexible with regards to topics and methodologies, with the key focus being on a system perspective. The journal specifically encourages studies that take an interdisciplinary view of the functioning of the Earth system and global change and that consider the roles of and interactions between multiple spheres of the Earth system. ESD accepts regional studies for review if they provide broader insights into the functioning of the Earth system, beyond the specific region that they study. Regional studies drawing conclusions of chiefly regional or local relevance are considered outside of the journal's scope. Heavily mathematical or technical papers should ensure accessibility to ESD's broad readership. Papers whose conclusions require specialist mathematical or technical knowledge to be understood, beyond what is typical for the Earth sciences community, are also considered outside the journal's scope. ESD welcomes modelling studies. It is generally expected that diagnostic studies using existing model simulations, such as global climate or Earth system models from CMIP, rely on multiple models. Where a single model is used, this should be scientifically well justified. Getting published in Earth System Dynamics Earth System Dynamics accepts submissions after an innovative open-access peer-review process. The peer-review process takes place in two stages involving the public discussion of preprints on EGUsphere, EGU's preprint repository, or in the scientific discussion forum Earth System Dynamics Discussions (ESDD). This form of peer review has been designed in order to do the following: foster scientific discussion; maximize the effectiveness and transparency of scientific quality assurance; enable rapid publication; make scientific publications freely accessible. In the first stage, manuscripts that pass a rapid access review by the editorial board are immediately posted as preprints on EGUsphere or in ESDD. They are then subject to interactive public discussion, during which the referees' comments (anonymous or attributed), additional comments by other members of the scientific community (attributed), and the authors' replies are also posted alongside the preprints. In the second stage, the peer-review process is completed; if
