Scope

Aims, scope and focus

Construction and Building Materials is published by Elsevier Ltd and is in Zone 1 of Engineering in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition, Top journal). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Concrete and Cement Materials Research, Innovative concrete reinforcement materials and Asphalt Pavement Performance Evaluation, together about 40.5% of its articles. Its main subfields are Civil and Structural Engineering and Building and Construction. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)

An international journal dedicated to the investigation and innovative use of materials in construction.Construction and Building Materials provides an international forum for the dissemination of innovative and original research and development in the field of construction and building materials and their application in new works and to repair practices. The journal publishes a wide range of innovative research and application papers which describe original laboratory works and experimental campaigns. Multi-part papers are discouraged. Construction and Building Materials only publishes review articles on priority topics invited by the editors. The journal focuses on construction and building materials; we do not consider papers that focus on structural engineering, materials chemistry, geotechnics, mining, backfill, soil or rock mechanics, and unbound road or railway bed layers. Construction and Building Materials covers topics including: cement, concrete reinforcement, bricks and mortars, additives, corrosion technology, ceramics, timber, steel, polymers, glass fibres, recycled materials, bamboo, earth-based materials, non-conventional building materials, materials for advanced manufacturing, bituminous materials and railway material applications. The scope of Construction and Building Materials includes, but is not restricted to, materials, NDT and monitoring aspects of new works and repair and maintenance of civil engineering structures including: bridges, buildings, dams, silos, highway pavements, water containment structures, housing, coastal defences and railways. At a time when the pressure is on engineers, architects and contractors to optimise their use of new materials and up-to-date technologies, Construction and Building Materials provides essential information that will help to improve efficiency, productivity and competitiveness in world markets. Construction and Building Materials is therefore vital reading for all professionals and academics involved with research into, or specification of, building materials.Author duties: Submissions shall adhere to the highest standards of research and publication ethics as described in the Guide for Authors. Acceptance of a manuscript for publication carries with it an understanding that the author, when requested, will fulfil an obligation to contribute their expertise to the review of others' manuscripts.
