The sheet music for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is prefaced with a musical direction that reads “con brio”, meaning “with spirit”. And so the piece begins, with one of the most iconic motifs in music history: *da-da-da-daaa*. Great works of humanity come with spirit, con brio, and this spirit is often communicated with text. Thus does our journal, Con Texte, communicate with the spirit of the Humanities. The Humanities are said to be in a state of crisis, compelled to justify themselves as practical, especially in terms of a financial return on investment. To be sure, these are not illegitimate concerns. But Con Texte proffers papers in the Humanities that do not necessarily begin with the premise of economic or practical need, and it rather strives to demonstrate the myriad merits of the Humanities on their own terms, for their own sake. This journal strives to demonstrate the merit of the Humanities in our contemporary world. Con Texte seeks to reinvigorate and reassess the ways in which the Humanities are an integral field of study in our modern society. Con Texte is a peer reviewed, Open Access journal. All articles are deposited in Scholars Portal Journals (a Trusted Digital Repository) for long-term preservation and access. Con Texte is indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and in Ebsco Humanities Source.
