Aims, scope and focus
Carbohydrate Polymer Technologies and Applications is published by Elsevier and is in Zone 2 of Chemistry in the CAS Journal Ranking (2025 upgraded edition). By OpenAlex counts of its recent articles, its largest topics are Advanced Cellulose Research Studies, Nanocomposite Films for Food Packaging and Polysaccharides and Plant Cell Walls, together about 34.1% of its articles. Its main subfields are Biomaterials. (generated from OpenAlex topic counts and CAS ranking data)
Carbohydrate Polymer Technologies and Applications is an Open Access journal dedicated to the scientific, technological, and applied aspects of polymers and oligomers containing carbohydrate units. Carbohydrate Polymer Technologies and Applications is a companion journal to Carbohydrate Polymers with a broader and more inclusive platform to accommodate the expanding diversity of research in this field. The journal covers all classes of carbohydrate-containing polymers and oligomers, including but not limited to: carbohydrate polymers, cyclodextrins, glycoproteins, glycolipids, carbohydrate-functionalized dendrimers, glycopeptide linkages, lipopolysaccharides, peptidoglycans, and proteoglycans. We also welcome papers that studies on carbohydrate-based oligomers, enzyme-driven modifications of macromolecular carbohydrate substrates, and the design and synthesis of new carbohydrate-containing molecular architectures, such as dendrimers and hybrid composites. Manuscripts involving carbohydrate-active enzymes are welcome, provided these enzymes act upon, modify, or interact with macromolecular carbohydrate substrates. To be considered for publication, manuscripts must focus primarily, though not exclusively, on the carbohydrate polymer or oligomer portion of the molecule and its contribution to the observed phenomenon, property, or application. From a molecular perspective, Carbohydrate Polymer Technologies and Applications emphasizes comprehensive studies on the detailed structural characterization, molecular weight determination, physicochemical property analysis, enzymatic biodegradation and biosynthesis, and structure–property and structure–performance relationships of carbohydrate-containing molecules. Research focused on the design, synthesis, and functionalization of novel carbohydrate-based molecules and materials is strongly encouraged. From an applications perspective, the journal promotes interdisciplinary research on the innovative use of carbohydrate-based materials across diverse fields, including archaeology, additive manufacturing, botany, chemical engineering, the chemical industry, agriculture, genetic engineering, healthcare, materials science, and medicine. Carbohydrate Polymer Technologies and Applications especially welcomes studies that integrate molecular-level understanding with technological and industrial applications, helping bridge the gap between fundamental science and practical use.All submitted manuscripts must explicitly mention, in both the title and abstract, at least one carbohydrate-containing molecule central to the study. The carbohydrate component must contain at least two monosaccharide units; therefore, studies focusing solely on free monosaccharides or simple monomeric carbohydrate species such as glycosides fall outside the journal’s scope.
